Trips planned by Robin · Copenhagen, Denmark

3 Days in Copenhagen: Nyhavn, New Nordic & the Bike Lanes.

Three midsummer days in Copenhagen, built around the water: Nyhavn and Amalienborg into a real harbour swim at La Banchina on day one, Rosenborg's castle and the Designmuseum with Tivoli after dark on day two, and Christianshavn's canals with a Torvehallerne market lunch to finish. Meals are the local canon, smørrebrød twice, porridge at Grød, seafood in the old Meatpacking District, and the whole city moves at walking-and-cycling scale.

Day 2: Castles, Danish design and Tivoli's lanterns

A day for gardens and design: Rosenborg's castle and roses in the morning, Danish design up close at midday, then Tivoli's lantern-lit gardens after dark.

5Nyhavn, one last look Sight

Sit canal-side with a coffee-free breather, the light hits the gabled facades best from the Christianshavn side of the bridge.

Order your last day

If you want the climbdo Our Saviour's spiral spire first thing, before the canal walk; mornings have the shortest lines, and you will not re-cross Christianshavn twice
If you care more about Christiania's rhythmkeep the plan's order; the freetown wakes late, so late morning is honestly its best hour, and take the spire only if the line is short
If you would rather end on the waterswap the spire for a harbour-bus ride from Christianshavn back toward Nyhavn, a public-transport boat that doubles as a canal cruise

Bucket-list foods in Copenhagen

Smørrebrød

Open-faced rye, built like small architecture: pickled herring, remoulade, dill. Eat it at a sit-down lunch once and a market counter once.

On this trip: Restaurant Juma, day 1 lunch, and Torvehallerne, day 3

Grød (the porridge)

Copenhagen made porridge a restaurant genre; the toppings do the heavy lifting.

On this trip: Grød, day 2 lunch, the rhubarb-crumble oatmeal

Meatpacking District seafood

Oysters and fish in a tiled former butcher hall, the city's favorite way to make an evening of dinner.

On this trip: Kødbyens Fiskebar, day 1 dinner

Kanelsnegl

The cinnamon swirl that Danish bakeries measure themselves by, best warm mid-morning. The plan leaves bakery stops to chance; ask Robin to pin one and it will.

Where to stay for this itinerary

Stay in Indre By (the medieval center) if…

Stay in Vesterbro / Meatpacking District if…

Stay in Christianshavn if…

Before you go

Do you need a car?

No, and the city actively discourages one. Walk it, or rent bikes and join the lanes; nothing on this plan is more than 25 minutes' pedal from the center.

What must be booked ahead?

Dinner at Kødbyens Fiskebar on a summer weekend, and Tivoli tickets are easier bought online. Rosenborg caps entries at busy times, so book the morning slot; everything else walks in.

Should we rent bikes?

Yes, for at least one day. Day 2's Rosenborg-to-Designmuseum-to-Bredgade run is flat, short and entirely on protected lanes, the gentlest possible introduction to cycling like a local.

How do you get in from the airport?

The Metro runs from the terminal to Kongens Nytorv, steps from Nyhavn, in about 15 minutes. It is genuinely the easiest airport arrival in Europe.

Is three days enough?

For the harbour city itself, yes. The famous thing it cannot fit is Louisiana, the modern-art museum up the coast, which deserves a half day on its own; that is the first thing a day four buys you.

4–5 days

Have 4–5 days?

First, give Tivoli a whole evening

Move Tivoli off day 2 into its own night: dinner inside the gardens, rides after dark, the lights doing their thing. It is a different place with three hours instead of forty minutes.

Day 4: Louisiana up the coast

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, half an hour north by train, hangs world-class art over a sculpture garden that runs to the sea. Most people's favorite Copenhagen day is not in Copenhagen.

Day 5: the bike day

Frederiksberg Gardens, the Carlsberg district's old brewery quarter, and a slow ride back along the lakes. No tickets, no lines, just the city at handlebar height.
